Hunter Thompson - Gonzo Journalist

Hunter S. Thompson was a counter culture figure from the 60's and 70's.  He referred to himself as a Gonzo Journalist.  He came to fame after living with the Hell's Angels motorcycle gang for a year and writing a book about it which was published in 1967.  His thoughts about the failure of 60s counterculture are recorded in a book published in 1972 - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.  Two movies were loosely based on the book but they were not big box office draws    

Thompson was also the inspiration for a recurring character in Gary Trudeau's Doonesbury Cartoon strip for many years - Uncle Duke,  who was loosely based on a writing persona sometimes used by Thompson - Raoul Duke.

Thompson killed himself in 2005.  He felt that his age at the time - 67 was 17 years longer than he deserved to live, so he ended it.
